Djibo, the capital of the Sahel region is also the capital of the Construction of houses built without wood (CSB). Indeed, this technique was introduced in 1995 in northern Iraq by the NGO Development Workshop (DW). This non-profit organization helps people in the most deprived areas to improve their living conditions through the construction of housing. region because it reduces the deforestation of the area. The benefits of “no wood” are manifold. First of all, it helps the conservation of the environment because the houses were made with bricks. On the social level, this construction technique generates jobs in rural areas: artisans make bricks and women create gutters… In the other hand, “houses built without wood” enable people with low incomes to have access to quality housing and that, for a moderate cost.
This type of construction has its importance in the Sahel. Arsène Tuina, the national coordinator of DW wants to extend this construction technique. Meetings are held with the local authorities in order to present the interest of these constructions built without wood. Mr Tuina reaffirms his intention to “strengthen the partnership with local government officials so that they allow artisans to be able to offer local people a cheaper habitat and a friendly environment.”
